Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (Gas mark 4/350°F). Line a muffin tin with 10 muffin cases.
- Place the butter in a mixing bowl, then add the dark brown sugar and eggs.
- Sift the self-raising flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder over the mixture.
- Using an electric whisk, start on low speed to combine, then increase to blend fully.
Baking
- Divide the mixture evenly into the muffin cases and smooth the tops.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until risen and springy to the touch. Cool on a wire rack.
Buttercream Preparation
- Whisk the butter until light and fluffy.
- Gradually sift in the icing sugar and cocoa powder, incorporating until smooth.
- Add a splash of milk if too thick to achieve piping consistency.
Decoration
- Pipe a generous swirl of buttercream onto each cooled cupcake.
- Dip the buttercream-covered cupcakes into purple and black sprinkles, alternating colors.
- Cut each strawberry lace into 8 pieces; push 4 pieces into the icing to create spider legs.
- Place 2 edible candy eyes on each cupcake.
Notes
For a richer chocolate flavor, consider using high-quality cocoa powder. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze without icing for up to a month.
