Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour A finely-milled flour that provides the perfect base for softness and structure in cookies.
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder An essential leavening agent that helps the cookies rise and achieve that lovely, fluffy texture.
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt Enhances the flavors, balancing the sweetness beautifully.
Wet Ingredients
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Its creamy richness is the heart of the dough, lending a lovely texture and flavor.
  • 2 ounces full-fat brick cream cheese, softened Adds a luxurious creaminess and subtle tang to the cookie.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Sweetens the dough while creating a delightful crisp edge.
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature Provides moisture and helps bind the ingredients together.
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract A fragrant and aromatic element that elevates the flavor.
  • 0.5 teaspoon almond extract Offers a nutty depth that complements the sweetness perfectly.
Toppings
  • 3/4 cup sanding sugar, pink and red or assorted colors Gives the cookies a festive sparkle and crunch.
  • 32 pieces chocolate hearts, unwrapped The perfect melty ribbon to tie each cookie together with deliciousness.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt until fully combined.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat together the softened butter and cream cheese on high speed until smooth.
  3. Gradually add granulated sugar, mixing until creamy. Incorporate the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract, beating until well combined.
  4. Slowly mix in the dry ingredients until the dough comes together but remains thick. Chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Roll tablespoon-sized dough portions into balls and coat them in sanding sugar. Place them on the baking sheets and flatten gently.
  3. Bake the cookies for 12-13 minutes until lightly browned. Let cool for 5 minutes and then press a chocolate heart into each cookie.

Notes

Ensure butter and cream cheese are at room temperature for optimal texture. Chilling the dough helps with cookie structure. For variation, use a pinch of sea salt on top of the melted chocolate heart for a sweet-salty burst.
