  • 30 pieces saltine crackers Add a few extra in case any break
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar Caramelizes beautifully for sweetness
  • 14 ounces sweetened condensed milk Adds creaminess to the toffee
  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate morsels For a decadent topping
  • 0.75 cup finely chopped walnuts Adds nutty flavor and crunch

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees F.
  2. Line a 15- x 10-inch jelly roll pan with heavy-duty foil.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt 1/4 cup of butter and pour it into the prepared pan, tilting to spread evenly.
  4. Lay out the saltine crackers in a single layer over the melted butter.
Cooking
  1. In the same saucepan, melt the remaining 1 cup of butter and stir in the brown sugar, bringing it to a boil over medium heat.
  2. Reduce heat and let it cook for 2 to 3 minutes while stirring occasionally.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in the sweetened condensed milk until smooth.
  4. Spread the toffee mixture evenly over the arranged crackers.
  5. Bake for 9 to 10 minutes, or until bubbly and golden brown.
  6. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate morsels over the hot toffee; let them melt for 5 minutes.
  7. Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee using an offset spatula or knife.
  8. Sprinkle the chopped walnuts over the melted chocolate, pressing them lightly into the chocolate.
Cooling and Serving
  1. Allow the candy to cool on the counter for about 30 minutes, then chill it in the refrigerator for 30 to 60 minutes until the chocolate is set.
  2. Lift the foil to remove the candy from the pan, peel off the foil, and cut into squares.
  3. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Notes

Use fresh ingredients for the best flavor. Consider variations such as using pecans or adding sea salt on top for a salted caramel twist.
