For the casserole

  • 5 large eggs Provides structure to the custard mixture.
  • 1½ cups half-and-half Adds richness without being too heavy.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Enhances every bite with aromatic allure.
  • 3 tablespoons Grand Marnier Adds a subtle, fragrant twist (optional).
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest Boosts the freshness and brightness of the dish.
  • ¼ teaspoon salt Balances the sweetness.

Method

Preparation
  1. Grease a 9 x 13-inch (23 x 33-cm) baking dish with butter.
  2. Melt the butter with the brown sugar, corn syrup, and one tablespoon of water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk until smooth and glossy, then pour into the prepared pan.
  3. Slice off the crusts from the brioche and cut the bread into 1½-inch (3.75-cm) thick slices. Arrange the slices over the caramel.
  4. Whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, vanilla, Grand Marnier, orange zest, and salt in a bowl until combined.
  5. Pour the custard evenly over the bread slices. Cover with plastic wrap and let it chill for at least 20 minutes, or overnight.
Baking
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Bake the casserole uncovered for 40 to 50 minutes until puffed and golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Brioche can be substituted with sourdough or challah. Consider adding spices like cinnamon for extra warmth. Top with whipped cream or fresh berries for extra decadence.
